Three 18-year-olds have been arrested in connection to a December 2024 shooting at Portland’s Peppermint Park, including two suspects who were charged for an alleged gunpoint robbery in South Portland just last month and were quickly released on lowered bail.

The shots fired incident occurred in the early hours of Dec. 26, 2024, at 139 Cumberland Ave. in Portland, opposite Peppermint Park, a public park with a children’s playground.

At the scene, police found damage to windows and bullet holes at several nearby apartments. No injuries were reported by any occupants of the apartments.

According to police, it appeared that over a dozen rounds were fired into into the building at 139 Cumberland Ave., as several shell casings were found in the snow in Peppermint Park.

On Wednesday night, Portland Police arrested 18-year-old Jeissey Khamis of Portland, 18-year-old Mogga Yanga of Portland, and an 18-year-old who was 17 at the time of the crime and was charged as a juvenile.

Khamis and Yanga were arrested in late April in connection to an alleged gunpoint robbery in Bug Light Park in South Portland.

In that incident, it was alleged that the two robbers displayed a firearm and used it to strike one of the victims during the robbery, but did not fire the gun.

Both Khamis and Yanga were released just two days after their arrest. Their bail had been initially set at $10,000, but Khamis was released on $1,000 cash bail and Yanga was released on $300 cash bail following their arraignments.

All three suspects were charged with elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and were taken to Cumberland County Jail.

The 18-year-old who was a juvenile at the time of the shooting was also charged with a separate adult criminal offense, but Portland Police declined to identify him due to his juvenile charges.
