Rome Is Burning But Portland Press Herald Proudly Publishes A Story From 1864 As ‘News’

Maine health care scandal, absentee ballots in an Amazon box, fraud surrounding mass-shooting fund, Chinese pot farms galore, Democrat congresswoman insider trading, fake Somali daycare centers.

And what does the lead columnist for Maine’s largest newspaper write about?

Abraham Lincoln’s decision to fire his Maine-born vice president.

Shouldn’t really be surprised that the Portland Press Herald chooses a 162-year-old story as its marquee piece to bookend Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, and Presidents Day, February 16.

But seriously?

Writing about Lincoln’s decision to can Hannibal Hamlin as his running mate in 1864 gives new meaning to “old news.”

Right up the Press Herald’s alley.

Along with a little gallows humor from columnist Steve Collins, who said dumping Hamlin wasn’t Lincoln’s worst decision.

“Going to Ford’s Theatre was.”

Haha.

Now maybe the paper of record can go back to trying to report news that isn’t 162 years old?

In honor of Presidents Day.

Though if the Portland Press Herald actually published news it would be Precedent Day.
